Since 9 May 2023, after a nearly three-month call for submissions, and workshops and selections by a panel of mentors and preliminary judges, we have shortlisted 16 winners among young artists from more than 20 cities and 65 colleges and universities around the world.

  • Ecosphere 3

    Black Void

    “Ecosphere 3” is a scientific hypothesis in a digital environment. The work uses parametric design, augmented learning algorithms, and AIGC tools to establish dynamic relationships between mushroom morphology and the environment, such as the relationship between the sun’s distance, radiation intensity, and the mushroom’s colour, and to simulate the mushroom’s growth, nutrient deprivation, mutation, and adaptation to the environment in a digital environment. deprivation, mutation and adaptation to the environment in a digital environment to establish the cosmic relationships in Ecosphere 3.

    Black Void

    Black Void is a technological art team composed of Cai Yixuan, Xiao Yuhan and other creators from various fields such as architectural design, digital art, algorithms and artificial intelligence, data science, experimental music, etc. Black Void is dedicated to exploring the innovations of art in terms of rules, perceptions, and distributions that are fuelled by new technologies. Topics of interest include climate change, interstellar species, and the connection between the virtual and the real.

  • Galaxy Telecom

    Sensory Atelier

    「Galaxy Telecom」is a device that allows communication across multiple dimensions, and people can choose which dimension they want to connect to. Even in the future, when technology is highly advanced, class divisions still exist, and while more people are using highly intelligent devices, there are still people at the grassroots level who are using basic devices to communicate with each other. Therefore, 「Galaxy Telecom」uses the telephone booth as a carrier to explore the relationship between public space, private space, communication methods and information flow. In the context of the exhibition, it is hoped to set up a perspective for the audience waiting to interact as if they were watching a theatre, where the audience entering the phone booth becomes the actors and we become immersed viewers.

    SENSORY ATELIER
    A futuristic art and design studio that attempts to constantly explore and expand the boundaries of art, design and technology. It creates multimedia interactions in the form of AI, augmented reality, real-time dynamics, covering print, fashion, film, digital installation and other media. The studio creates new experimental digital experiences with pioneering and diverse styles.

    Bingqing DONG

    Reason: I’ve noticed two things lately, one is that there are some people on social media platforms who use AIGC to generate 3D visuals and then pretend to do it themselves, and they get a lot of likes because of the information gap.

    The second is that my social media followers seem to care more about “how I live” and who I hang out with/take selfies with, and posting about my life gets four times as many likes as posting about my artwork, which isn’t a bad thing, and doesn’t make me feel any better.

    Execution: So I’m thinking of making a new account with a fake artist name, and all my work is calculated using AIGC, and running it for a while to see how it turns out, how many followers, how many likes, and what the comments are saying. Get someone to do the maths to come up with a name, and then call the artwork after that.

    One of the things that my musician/web celebrity friends are very concerned about is data analysis, the agency will also discuss this, and I will also pay attention to my own data, and these numbers are very interesting. In the end, you will find that it’s all a virtual bubble, maybe because in this era, everyone only wants to focus on the prosperity of the moment, and it becomes very difficult to think about too much of the long term and too much of the meaning of life.

    Dong Bingqing

    Dong Bingqing is a postgraduate student of Ancient Art in the Department of History and Theory of China Academy of Art under the tutelage of Fan Jingzhong and Wan Muchun. Her works are mainly in the form of installations/3D images, which are diversified and break the conventional field, exploring the infinite possibilities of art forms, and are always centred on her personal romantic and self-reflective spiritual core, hiding her thinking, academics and iconography under her vision, and constructing a moving world infused with emotions with the vision of vivid virtual characters and boundless imagination.

    The idea of the work originated from the new crown epidemic at the beginning of the time when I was idle at home, by chance to meet a person of the opposite sex from the network, after understanding each other, the topic is more and more, more and more smooth exchanges. At that time, I felt that the other side of their own side, rather than 30 kilometres away from each other on the other side of the city, we crossed the colourful modern city, crossing the streets and lanes of the traffic, connecting with each other, sharing interesting experiences, spouting oddballs to see and hear. A month later, we met offline for dinner, and I thought we would be able to communicate in the real world just as we did in the virtual world. But the reality was so overwhelming. My attention was attracted by the food on the table, by the liquid in the glass of water, and by the lips moving up and down on the opposite side of the table, while I didn’t know how to respond to the words spoken by the person sitting across from me, as if he was a stranger I didn’t know, who just happened to sit across from me today. I felt that the distance between myself and the other person was not just across a table of food, but also across something that does not exist in the real world, something that cannot be described but does exist, which became a barrier to our communication with each other, lengthening the distance between us.

    This sense of distance, of not knowing whether it is close or far, and the difference between the virtual world and the real world prompted me to make this work. The virtual world brings me the illusion of being familiar with others, the state of human relationship, and the loss of life in the virtual and real world.

    Graduated from Taipei University of the Arts Master’s Program in New Media Arts. Good at writing code to create video animations and interactive devices. I want to make works in line with this era through my most authentic feelings for the present, and find the relationship chain that I can trade with this society as an artist.

  • The Imagination of the Other

    Gaiqi Zheng

    Imagining the Other examines the phenomenon of cross-cultural misinterpretation using chess pieces as objects. Chess originated in India and has been developing continuously. People from different cultural backgrounds will bring their own culture and experience to interpret the Other in a preconceived way, which has led to different degrees of misinterpretation of chess. Through three exhibitions: “The Imagery of Chess” curated by Duchamp in 1944, “Chess: East and West, Past and Present” in 1968, and “The Art of Chess” in 2009, the creators have discovered how chess pieces have evolved from the types of pieces, to the materials used to carve them, to the way in which they are made, to the way in which they have been used. The Art of Chess 2009 discovers the rich diversity of chess pieces, from the types of pieces, to the materials used to carve them, to the symbols. The work collects more than 3,000 pieces from different civilisations, periods and materials, and uses machine learning to create more than 20,000 pieces from 26 different cultures. The final presentation includes chess sculptures, videos and books to explore cross-cultural misinterpretations, emphasise the impact of images and language on future cultural integration, and anticipate the possibility of future cultural integration.

    Qingdao, Shandong, co-founder of TTTB Artist-Run Space, specialises in cross-cultural, tabletop gaming, and graphic experimentation in art creation, including research, documentation, art, and personal publications.

  • Modular Theatre

    Hongcai LEI; ZIqing XU

    The original intention of Modular Theatre is to build an open and scalable narrative system that responds to the absurdity that is inevitable in the face of large and fragile frameworks. How can we free ourselves from this? We look forward to creating a diffuse and interconnected “space” in which the audience builds a self-narrative by combining the modules and, based on this, connecting with each other in the flow of the system.

    Modular Theatre will build a series of performance modules with different properties and functions, and input, output and processing modules through embedded communication links. The output will have three forms of sound/light/dynamic machinery, responding to the environment and the audience entering the space in a specific interactive form.

    The product and design brand co-founded by Lei Hongcai, who focuses on sound and space, and Xu Ziqin, who focuses on algorithms and narrative, is also the modular narrative platform they are developing. Explore the construction of open and extensible narrative system through interactive technology. His research technology areas include cluster intelligence, modularity, tangible user interface (TUI), embedded communication and machine learning.

  • Only the Clouds Know

    Jiaqi LU

    Only the Cloud Knows is a browser extension that invokes Google Cloud Vision for artistic recognition of images. When the software is running, the inspection results sent back from Cloud Vision’s application programming interface (API) – a label with a confidence score – are overlaid on the images defined as art as the web page loads. The work replaces subjective aesthetic judgment with the correlation of pixel patterns in pre-labeled data samples, and artistic reality that cannot be quantified by the accuracy measure of computational models, aiming to reflect how our belief in technological vision has blinded us, and to reveal how accelerated cognitive automation has short-circuited our individualized circuits. And invites users to consider the limitations of this data-centric worldview: what falls below the threshold of identifiability? What will be left out of the future of algorithmic regulation?

    Lu Jiaqi

    He graduated from the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, and has participated in the courses of the School of Poetic Computing and the School of Machines, Making & Make-Believe. She focuses on machine learning and decoding and reprogramming existing technological paradigms at the intersection of art, technology, and cultural studies.

    In the form of a distributed narrative game, the work concretized the process of retrieving self-memory as an adventure in space. The player needs to visit each virtual space, read the broken memories remaining in the space, and follow the guide of the prompt text to travel through each space, and finally rebuild the complete self-memory.

    We construct the order and content of each space based on the narrative logic in the derived text, and introduce gamification design techniques to design interactive forms related to narrative content for each space, so that players can experience the distributed narrative of the work in the alternations of interaction and browsing, so as to explore the narrative possibility of combining virtual space with gamification design.

    Currently studying art and Technology at China Academy of Art, she is good at diversified divergent thinking and spatial narration. Her works include multi-media video, installation, new media theater, etc.

    Majoring in Art and Science and Technology at School of Innovative Design, China Academy of Art, her research interests include map design, installation, aesthetic education, etc.

  • Two Little Children Arguing for the Day

    How do you get AI to have a poetic debate?

    We will try to give two robots different knowledge, and build a tense game relationship between them, so that the two pull each other, in order to present a ridiculous fable of mechanical life, reflecting on human’s own knowledge construction from the perspective of artificial intelligence.

    Both are equipped with image recognition models trained on different data sets. Therefore, they will produce different understandings of the luminous objects along the way, and carry out pictorial expressions, and continue to debate the luminous objects. At the same time, the two robots will be connected by chains, so they will pull and tangle with each other as they move. They will walk along the road, avoiding obstacles, wandering through the city at night, debating the light they see along the way. After sunrise, they will stop their steps, replenish their energy with photovoltaic panels, and wait for the next night’s journey.

    Since 2018, the two have been engaged in science and technology art creation and art activity planning together. With artificial intelligence robots, brain science interactive devices, multimedia images and other major creative media, they have responded to new problems in the era of technological change through interdisciplinary research and creation methods. His works have been exhibited in the Central Academy of Fine Arts Art Museum, Beijing Times Art Museum, Shanghai Ming Contemporary Art Museum, etc.

    “Lanfang” refers to the overseas homeland established by the Chinese on the island of Borneo in the 17th and 18th centuries, an ideal reality created by utopian impulses. History is constantly re-rehearsed through oral narration, legends, and rituals. Artificial intelligence, in the form of a “big other”, turns the history constructed by human civilization into the whole material. Lanfang Realization attempts to present the other hidden in the culture outside the mainstream history with the attitude of artistic practice, in the potential space of the culture of the Chinese subethnic group in Southeast Asia. Discover a Chinese historical science fiction that can be experienced.

    Wen Chenmin

    Lives and works in Hangzhou. Postdoctoral researcher of Art Media Mixed Reality Laboratory, Doctor of Theory and Practice of Transmedia Art, China Academy of Art. His focus is on the cultural potential space and heterogeneous experience in art media, focusing on the “discrete”, the anthropological landscape of Chinese Sino, virtual ethnography, Chinese futurism and other studies.

  • The Da Vinci Project: A New Renaissance

    If man is the fire, thought is the light, behavior is the shadow, then Da Vinci is the shadow of the shadow. The work takes the protagonist Leonardo Da Vinci as a clue, and tells the story of people’s prosperous life on the cloud, the emergence of latent crises, and the connection of digital subjects under the background of decentralization in the near future. The film makes extensive use of AIGC as material to weave the Renaissance and Web3.0 into the same narrative, aiming to reflect the disillusion of the power of the people at the bottom in different social processes and the linear shackles of future imagination from the perspective of technological futurism. Will technology become a new form of theological oppression? How can we imagine an alternative future?

    A four-member team from the Institute of Society and Strategy at the China Academy of Art. For a long time, he focuses on how technological change affects concrete life, and constantly makes creative attempts in the unstable field of narrative, image and installation.

    “Singing bot” is intended to build a cyberconfessional under techno-religiosity, showing the beginning and end of how people’s unspoken words can be conveyed through music and divine light beyond reason. When the viewer stands in front of the device, he can resort to the microphone. At this time, the device converts the audio characteristics of the viewer into music, and controls the emission of the laser matrix combined with the rhythm of the music. Finally, the light directly directs the cloud to indicate the transmission path and the completion of the transmission.

    I am studying for a master’s degree in Interaction design at Tongji University. My research focuses on the balance between technology and nature. Explore the use of biological materials or biological data as a medium for artistic creation, and continue to write biological poetry based on digital media such as sound and electricity.

    She is studying for a master’s degree in digital media design at Nanjing University of the Arts. Her research focuses on the integration of narrative across media, and her creations focus on topics such as network culture, digital immortality, and identity. He tries to give his works imagination through daily life and potential innovation.

  • Fertilizer

    Yanru XU; Yuwei JIN; Xueyi HUANG; Yu YAN

    Fertilizer is a two-player co-op live performance game based on motion capture technology. The game explores the relationship between the body and virtual space, as well as the mutual influence and control between players. The story aims to convey our stand against war and the importance of protecting the earth.
    Core mechanics: Player 1 wears a motion capture suit, and its body movement data is transmitted to the character model in the game scene in real time, and the body will form the terrain in the game. Player 2 will assume the role of a slime mold to control the computer, explore the scene from a first-person perspective, and use Player 1’s body posture to navigate through in-game obstacles.

    Artist team

    The members are all from Goldsmiths ‘computational Arts and Game design majors. The team is led by Xu Yanru as art director and focuses on digital media art. Huang Xueyi focuses on 3D design, biological design and dynamic capture technology; Jin Yuwei is responsible for the implementation and design of the game’s features, while Yan Yu focuses on capture technology and character design. They bring together expertise from many fields to work together to create unique digital artworks. They combine play and art to create a new form of play theater, blending the body with the digital space, while calling on the audience to re-examine the environment in which we live, against pollution and war.

  • 4.5 (?) -Mixed reality factual remodelling in the presence of fragmented information

    The work delves into the problem of electricity fraud in Myanmar, using a symbolic interactionist approach to analyze the actions of the protagonists of electricity fraud and the factors behind it. Combining geography, satellite maps and intelligence, the dual nature of the phenomenon of electrical fraud is revealed. At the same time, the organizational form, the way of transmission, and the psychological mechanism of scammers and victims are studied. Finally, objective facts are presented through mixed reality and digital narrative images to warn people against overseas fraud forces.

  • The Outsider

    Haiyu ZHENG

    Inspired by Foucault’s Discipline and Punishment, the work attempts to create a scene atmosphere with the help of architectural space to explore the uniform in civilized order and the formation and reconstruction of self-consciousness in a disciplined society, and supports the narrative through video.

    Zheng Haiyu

    3D artist, dynamic designer and director, holds an architecture degree from the University of Michigan. She explores more possibilities in experiments where different disciplines collide, and uses the perceptions learned in architecture to create new narrative models. Her years of solid architectural background have nurtured her sensitivity to scale, materiality and spatial atmosphere, helping her create innovative 3D art and animation with strong visual impact.
