In the "Co-evolution" digital art special section, we hope to use the power of art to awaken the audience to think about the balance between science and technology and ecology, and then explore the role of human beings in this era full of challenges and opportunities.

 

Science City, as a term and field with great imaginative vigour and sci-fi plots, carries endless scientific and technological progress and the crystallisation of human wisdom. At the same time, the use of Science City as a planning exhibition area open to the public is a collection of educational and dissemination significance. Combined with the emphasis on intelligent ecology in the planning exhibition hall of Beijing Zhongguancun Science City (Haidian District) at the beginning of its construction, in the special unit of “Co-evolution” digital art, we hope to use the power of art to awaken the audience to think about the balance between science and technology and ecology, and then explore the role of human beings in this era full of challenges and opportunities. There is often a subtle tension between technological development and our relationship with the natural environment.

In the evolution of species from ancient times to the present, their categories and definitions have been recursive and reorganised, but most importantly, in these multi-dimensional iterations, messages from genes and technological revelations have been seen and preserved, becoming the ecological sphere of human civilisation in the unknown future. This special unit brings together the works of outstanding digital artists from all over the world, who interpret the interplay between technology, ecology and human beings in a unique way. The state of particles in nature will be explored from a microscopic perspective, and information from the universe will be read romantically from a macroscopic dimension using space communication technology. At the same time, there will also be closer to people’s lives using digital technology to call for the protection of animals, as well as exploring the symbiotic and collaborative relationship between human beings and digital life. The artist transforms the cold digital code of technology into a vivid and heart-touching form of interactive expression, bringing us a dialogue across latitudes.

  • Dichotomy, digital image

    Dichotomy is a video animation conceived as a dichotomous journey between the development of human technology and the species. Human beings are complex creatures, capable of greatness and destruction, of goodness and evil; while the whale is an endangered creature and one of the oldest animals, born before mankind.

    Giuseppe Loschiavo

    Visual artist working and living in London and Milan. His creations and research aim to create a bridge between art and technology, his works often present a post-human narrative and often incorporate the use of technology and science, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, VR, infrared systems or microorganisms in the laboratory, in order to explore the coexistence between man, nature and technology.

  • The Mimetic Field, Interactive Images

    Zhang Haichao

    The “mimetic field” is an algorithmic bio-nurturing experiment based on the conceptual prototype of “mimetic environments” for communication media. The audience enters the “system” field and becomes the data to be collected, processed and transmitted, and travels in the space together with the digital organisms in the field. The audience’s position is sensed in real time and triggers a ripple interaction. There is no absolute subjectivity of human beings in the field, and the audience’s behaviours, no matter they are moving or stationary, resisting or obsessed, will be swallowed up by the system and become part of it.

    Zhang Haichao

    New media artist, born in Chongqing in 1987, graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree, and graduated from Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 2016 with a Master’s degree. He now teaches at the Experimental Art School of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, and is the head of the Science and Technology Art Studio.

    Qiu Chuangwei

    The whole work of “Mountain-Water-Star” takes “mountain, water and star” as the main elements of creation, condensing the natural imagery of “green water and green mountain”, “mountain of clouds”, “golden mountain”, “mountain of ice” and “mountain of stars”, Mountains of Green Water”, “Mountains of Clouds”, “Mountains of Gold”, “Mountains of Ice” and “Mountains of Stars” as the main elements of the creation, and through the LED fan screen display technology, the five strange mountains are “suspended” in front of the audience.     Qiu Chuangwei

    Born in Shangrao, Jiangxi Province in 1994, Qiu Chuangwei graduated from the Experimental Art Department of the School of Intermedia Art of China Academy of Art in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree, and is a partner of Baimechuan Art Studio. His creative fields include installation art, video art, digital art and game art, etc. He now lives and works in Hangzhou.

  • Voxel Ark, digital animation

    ACE Lab discusses the symbiotic relationship between man and nature through the work “Voxel ark”, creates virtual environments through digital animation, realises encounters between humans and digital animals through interactive technology, and discusses the future of art creation through interdisciplinary collaborative creation with scientists.

    ACE Lab 

    ACE Lab (Art, Creation, Evolution), initiated by artist Sicheng Wang, is an experimental media art group linking artists. We use art combined with technology to think about the present and the future. At the same time, we use our works to care about our society, actively discussing public welfare, science popularisation, art, history and other topics to practice the social participation of art.

  • The Orchid Boat Series, digital images

    The Orchid Boat Series is an organic, information-processing and storage “carrier” that carries the future blueprint text inside. Just as Noah’s Ark serves as a sample repository for the earth’s genes, perhaps the last function of the rapid development of technology and information technology is to preserve the spark of human civilisation and ecological information.

    Wang Yicai

    Female, 1993, lives in Chengdu, China, MFA degree in Art and Design from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. She is a new media artist, a teacher of Virtual Reality and Interaction Design at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, and a former member of UFO Media lab.
