Hu Zhiling AR Program

“Hu Zhiling seeks to explore the possibilities of digital cultural travel and rural construction in the meta-universe, and offers a planetary scale experience in making exhibitions.”

“Hu Zhiling” is a digital curatorial AR practice based on the small program terminal “Thunder Institute” for the first time to use augmented reality (AR) technology to integrate scientific and technological art works into the field. As a meta-cosmic unit of  Hu Shiguang · Art ecological corridor in Longyou County, Quzhou, it integrates with local architecture, natural environment, history and humanity, and mirrors reality.

These AR works re-show a typical Chinese village from multiple dimensions such as virtual space narration, the relationship between digital objects and audiences, and local culture mining. It seeks to explore the possibilities of digital cultural travel and rural construction in the meta-universe, and provides a “planetary scale” experience in making exhibitions. At the same time, Thunder Institute brings together artists and technology companies to create a hybrid field where the virtual and the real overlap, leading everyone to explore the new relationship between urban and rural, nature, humans, fantasy and technology.

The project consists of a "Hupan Daily newspaper" compiled using AR technology and AIGC tools, and six commissioned works by artists scattered among fields, wetlands, villages and temples.

  • ANCIENT CHINESE UFO

    Warp-Drive Engine

    The “ANCIENT CHINESE UFO” is an ancient UFO whose arrival leads to a fantastic adventure about the changing geographical environment of the Dragon Tour. In this fictional universe, black holes appear everywhere, making space and time disappear. In order to stop the threat, ANCIENT CHINESE UFO brought the Feather immortal clan to help people build various wonders in various places, and the Longyou Grottoes were born. The work further promotes the attention and interpretation of local culture and legends. At the same time, through screen interaction, the audience can participate in the narrative and feel the local science fiction.

    How to play: Through the small program to identify the stone pillars, the audience will witness a huge energy to open the black hole, feather fairy cut the dragon you square from the air, and by the audience to drag the square to the black hole, repair the space-time crack.

    Warp-Drive Engine is a team of teachers and students (Yu Tongzhou, Chen Yueling, Liu Ziyi, Zhou Xujie) from the Institute of Media and Interaction of the School of Innovative Design of the China Academy of Art, focusing on the exploration of art and technology under the framework of mixed reality-related technologies, using programming and imagination to create the interesting future we envision, and pass on our foreboding to society.

  • ECHOED BREEZE

    New New studio

    The ECHOED BREEZE lis a work of reading and interacting through AR. Using images of natural phenomena, cultural activities, seasonal plants and festival customs as materials, the artist trained a ChatGPT that can generate poems of summer scenery. These verses appear virtually through a screen over the field of the dragon, blowing on them, and they can be blown away in the wind. Through the reorganization and sound of characters, the work presents the diversity of reading text in natural space.

    How to play: Trigger a virtual poem in the mini program page, by blowing on the phone’s microphone, the poem is blown like a dandelion, and the collision produces a pleasant sound.

  • LINGLING-LING

    Shi Yubin

    LINGLING is a digital life form created by AI technology integrating ecological data from Longyou. It flashes into the wetland in the form of AR, and the audience can participate in the process of its growth and change by tapping the screen of the phone. The work attempts to explore the possibility of harmonious coexistence between human beings and nature. The possibility of ecological evolution is discussed through the algorithm evolution of AI, and people’s attention to environmental protection is called for in an artistic way.

    How to play: Select a physical plane in the mini-program to release the Spirit of Linling. Tap the water balloon to help it grow, and walk inside the creatures to get a biological map.

    Born in 1991, Yubin Shi is a curator and digital artist. He graduated from Xi ‘an Academy of Fine Arts in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree and Venice Academy of Fine Arts in 2019 with a master’s degree. He mainly uses digital image technology as a means of creation, focuses on cutting-edge digital art technologies such as AI, AR, MR And Crypto, and constantly tries to combine digital technology with artistic expression.

  • 4D WONDERER OF ZHONGBU ZONE

    ZHANG Haichao & FOG TABSTATION

    This is a science-fiction rural survey based on the culture of Longyou village. Under the fictional background of the “four-dimensional crack” found in the village of Chinatown during the investigation by teachers and students of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, the work invites the audience to turn on AR and follow the four-dimensional roaming creatures through the “crack”. The experience space is full of Longyou Gu Li historical reproduction/cultural relics revitalization, Cuiguangyan Village historical changes/reorganization and restoration, village folk culture interpretation, village life status description, Longyou history + future structure reorganization and other different time/geographical dimensions.

    How to play: Open the mini program, follow the path, and trigger different digital cultural interpretations by identifying the village structures such as Windows and doors with logos.

    FOG TABSTATION is an open multi-disciplinary research and creation group initiated by the Science and Technology Art Teaching and Research Office of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, which is a mobile cooperation platform composed of artists, scholars and students with the same concern. It focuses on the future of culture and education, and the potential of science and technology + humanities interdisciplinary creation in the art context of future media, and bridging the boundaries between art and technology. It focuses on exploring the potential of future visual art from the perspective of technology and concept.

    Haichao ZHANG  was born in 1987, a new media artist, and is now the head of the Science and Technology Art Studio of the New Media Art Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. The direction of his creative practice includes but is not limited to exploring the metastable narrow zone of digital and physical space with XR extended reality, and realizing the surrealistic digital space with limited liberation based on the game interaction framework.

  • HYPER TEMPLE OF MR MAO

    Xie Mingxuan

    HYPER TEMPLE OF MR MAO combines augmented reality technology and generative artificial intelligence technology to deconstruct and reshape the historical legend of the local small god Maolingong in Longyou to create a unique virtual temple fair small theater. The audience is invited to enter the shipyard Maoling Temple and dance with the AI-generated Maoling Gong. With a temple fair experience that is both realistic and illusory, the artist explores new ways of space generation driven by digital technology.

    How to play: Scan the facade of the building in the mini-program to trigger the HYPER TEMPLE OF MR MAO, and pass through the tunnel to reach the temple fair.

    Xie Mingxuan is a Cyberarchitect, independent developer and digital artist, is committed to using mixed reality technology to reorganize, reconstruct and reproduce architectural space, and explore the new form of architecture as a whole art in the post-human and post-digital context. He is the founder of Vrch Studio, a mixed reality studio in London.

  • THE END OF BLOSSOMS

    SpectrumLab

    THE END OF BLOSSOMS uses augmented reality technology to present a unique spatial narrative landscape experience for the audience. In the seemingly empty flower shop, there are countless virtual flowers, which are not only the symbol of desire and good, but also the embodiment of desire and distraction. The work connects the space experience with the inner feeling. In the process of looking for virtual flowers, the audience needs to go through many puzzles, and at the same time, they have to face their own inner desires and struggles.

    How to play: Scan the facade of the building through the mini program, click to activate the virtual light ball, follow its guidance through the three stages of seeing flowers, following flowers, releasing flowers, find digital flowers, as a collection.

    SpectrumLab is a creative digital team that spans the fields of architecture and augmented reality. Its members, Tang Yingxuan and Wang Haonan, graduated from UCL Architectural Design major with a master’s degree. Their research direction is the relationship between AR technology and urban space, exploring urban space and human settlement environment through AR.

  • Hupan Daily

    RAIDEN INST

    Hupan Daily Side Daily is a fictional newspaper edited using AR technology and AIGC tools. The contents include a poem, selected Longyou history, popular science of Longyou Dialect, Gumie past column, Longyou Events, AR column “Hupan Anecdotes”, and a playguide for “Playing with the Spirit of Hu”.

    Hupan Daily can be regarded as a guide manual that integrates the research, creation and implementation of the project, adding a complete narrative background to the audience’s digital experience. At the same time, Hupan Daily can also be an external portal for the “Spirit of Hu” project. Viewers who did not go to the scene can also watch a reduced version of the six works by scanning the AR part of the newspaper.
