Young Institutions

"Institution is no longer a word exclusive to art museums; it represents a more diverse, independent and dynamic young community."

The “Young Institutions” forum on 10 October 2021 at the Ming Contemporary Art Museum in Shanghai brought together friends to share their experiences and thoughts on the organism of “institutions”. In the context of contemporary art, institution is synonymous with the operation and management of power. However, in order to better adapt to the current art ecology, more and more new types of institutions have appeared in the public’s view.

Some of them are creative workshops that evolve from artists’ own studio space; some are online platforms for continuous output of ideas through textual expression; some are independent departments incubated in art museums, and so on, all of these diversified forms appear in order to find the most suitable output of ideas for different groups and disciplines.

Therefore, in addition to learning from each other, this forum aims to establish a long-lasting relationship and explore more active production modes, organisational mechanisms and problematic awareness that are more suitable for the contemporary art ecology.
